What to wear for family photos

When choosing what to wear for family photos I always consider the backdrop colors first. I like to coordinate with the theme in something fairly neutral in a solid color. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident in what they are wearing.

Here are a few classic pieces I love for family photos as many of you are taking your Christmas card pictures this month.

For mom: A flowing pleated skirt photographs so well. I love the movement of this skirt from Jenni Kayne with a matching sweater. A turtleneck dress is always a pretty option too.

For dad: I love a blazer or timeless Ralph Lauren sweater for him.

For girls: La Coqueta is one of my favorite brands for the girls right now. The pieces are so well made and look like something a little princess would wear. We also love Little English and Pepa beautiful for dresses. I got these gold flats for Kate and these velvet flats for Lake for special occasions and our recent family photos. Cowboy boots also look great with girls dresses.

For boys: A Little English sweater and a polo is so cute and classic for the boys. These Cat & Jack pants are a great option for boys and Ford also wears them for school often.

Something to consider when choosing a time – natural lighting. If you are wanting to take photos outside, try for a sunny day in the shade for the most beautiful light. Usually just before sunset is a pretty time for photos. Just make sure everyone is fed before. 😉 If you are using a professional, talk with your photographer about a time you both think is best for your location and that also works with your family’s schedule. I also like to ask for a lot of candid photos from the photographer.

Last, have fun taking the photos! Try not to worry about them being perfect. Make it a fun happy experience because after all these photos are capturing real life memories! 🙂
